Imagine it otherwise
“The ability that we have to be able to imagine things other than the way they present themselves in reality. Like, we can imagine them differently and then work towards that.”
Will is the human capacity to encounter reality as it is, imagine it otherwise, choose among possible futures, and accept responsibility for working toward one.
Choice is inseparable from responsibility. Imagination opens a possibility. Will includes choosing and acting toward it.
Give yourself permission
“It was who gave themselves permission to change their reality.”
The historical divide between builders and everyone else was not only technical ability. It was also who believed they were entitled to intervene in reality. As implementation becomes more available through agents, more people can recognize themselves as builders and give themselves permission to change what they encounter.
“Everybody knows that they’re building, and then building allows you to change your reality.”
This invitation is practical. A teacher, mechanic, mother, merchant, operator, patient, or neighbor brings knowledge from living. That knowledge helps determine what should exist and how it should work for the people it serves.
The human remains the principal
The human originates or recognizes the problem, imagines possibilities, chooses what ought to exist, grants authority, sets boundaries, judges consequences, and bears responsibility for what enters the world.
An agent may execute within permission, budgets, tools, and constraints. Capability does not confer moral authority.
As the distance between intention and consequence becomes smaller, what a person chooses becomes more consequential. The work is to decide what matters and remain answerable for the direction.
